Grapes: Saperavi Style: Qvevri, red ABV: 13.5% Colour: Red Any added sulphites: Minimal Certification: Organic, biodynamic Filtered: No Size: 75cl
A delicate, medium-bodied red that has gentle aromas of cherries, strawberries and wildflowers.
Georgian qvevri wines are known for being complex, interesting, unusual and, for the uninitiated, downright weird. This natural Saperavi, one of the most well known native Georgian red grapes is extremely easy drinking (for Georgia) so a great entry point for the genre. The fruits are foresty and a little spicy, the body is medium with a core of richness and the acidity is cutting and sapid. A fantastic Georgian wine!
Iberieli is a family winery run by Zurab Topuridze in the Guria Region of West Georgia. The name Iberieli – which was chosen by Zurab’s children – refers to the ancient people in Caucasus who made wine several thousands of years ago, believed to be the inventers of Qvevri winemaking. The family’s aim is to maintain the authentic tradition of Qvevri winemaking in Georgia, producing unique natural wines from native grapes, truly representing terroir of origin. The entire wine making process takes place within the quevri – initial fermentation right through to maturation, with the fermenting grape juice being left on the skins and even grape stems to produce wines of exceptional flavour and complexity.
